The chaturthamsa cuts each 30-degree sign into four quarters of 7 degrees 30 minutes and re-places a planet by the quarter it occupies. The counting rule is short: the quarters go to the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th signs counted from the sign the planet already stands in — the kendras, or quadrants, of that sign. Classically it is the varga consulted for home, fixed property, land and fortune. Jagannatha Hora derives it from astronomical longitudes, not a printed table.
The kendras of any sign repeat that sign's movable, fixed or dual quality, so a planet's D4 sign always carries the same quality as its D1 sign — a planet in a movable sign lands in a movable sign here, and that holds for all twelve signs. The four chaturthamsas of Capricorn
Capricorn's four quarters fall on the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th signs counted from Capricorn itself. The longitudes are from a sample chart cast for 1 January 1990, 12:00 noon IST, Chennai — a fabricated illustration, never a real birth — where Mercury sits at 2 degrees 00 minutes of Capricorn and Venus at 12 degrees 31 minutes.

Mercury, in the first quarter, stays in Capricorn; Venus, in the second, moves to Aries. Capricorn is movable, and so are Aries, Cancer and Libra — the kendras of a sign never break its quality.
