The Dasamsa, written D10 and also called the Karmamsa, cuts each 30-degree sign into ten equal parts of exactly 3 degrees. A planet's part is fixed by its longitude, and the sign that part maps to by whether the holding sign is odd-numbered or even-numbered. In an odd sign the ten run from that sign itself; in an even sign, from the ninth sign along. Classically the D10 is the varga consulted for career, profession, status and achievements.
That switch is why a dasamsa chart must be drawn, not eyeballed from the rasi: the same degree in an even sign lands eight signs — 240 degrees — further round than in an odd one. Divide a planet's degrees within its sign by three: the whole number gives the part, first through tenth. The Saptamsa uses a six-sign shift where the Dasamsa uses eight.
What is the dasamsa also called?
Dasamaamsa is the long form; the classical literature also calls it the Karmamsa and the Swargamsa. In search and software it is written D10 — dashamsha chart, dasamsa chart and D10 chart all name the same ten-part division.
