D11 Chart Calculator - Rudramsa Chart
A free D11 chart calculator for the rudramsa — eleven parts of 2 degrees 43 minutes 38 seconds in every sign, each planet re-placed by the count this calculator uses by default.
Eleven does not divide thirty evenly, so one rudramsa part is 2 degrees 43 minutes and a little over 38 seconds of arc, and eleven of them fill a sign. To find a body's part, multiply its degrees within the sign by eleven, divide by thirty, keep the whole number and add one. Jagannatha Hora draws the D11 from astronomical longitudes alongside the other divisional charts.
By default the count starts from the sign that lies as far from Aries counted backwards as the occupied sign lies from Aries counted forwards, then steps on through the zodiac, one sign for every part after the first. So Aries and Libra start from themselves, Taurus starts from Pisces, Gemini from Aquarius, Cancer from Capricorn, Leo from Sagittarius and Virgo from Scorpio, and the second half of the zodiac mirrors the first.
Not every tradition counts the D11 this way. Other methods count it backwards through the zodiac (sometimes called the Ekadasamsa) or reverse the count in the even signs, and a tool built on one of those can show different signs for the same birth. Running the 132 parts through the zodiac in order from Aries gives exactly the same D11 as this calculator's count. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's sixteen-chart scheme does not include the D11; traditionally it is named for the eleven Rudras and read beside the eleventh house, the house of gains.
The eleven parts of Sagittarius
Every sign has its own eleven-step run. Here is Sagittarius, ninth from Aries and therefore started from Leo, ninth from Aries counted the other way. Each row is one part, its stretch of the sign and the D11 sign it gives.
| Part | Stretch of Sagittarius | D11 sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 deg 00' to 2 deg 43' 38" | Leo |
| 2 | 2 deg 43' 38" to 5 deg 27' 16" | Virgo |
| 3 | 5 deg 27' 16" to 8 deg 10' 55" | Libra |
| 4 | 8 deg 10' 55" to 10 deg 54' 33" | Scorpio |
| 5 | 10 deg 54' 33" to 13 deg 38' 11" | Sagittarius |
| 6 | 13 deg 38' 11" to 16 deg 21' 49" | Capricorn |
| 7 | 16 deg 21' 49" to 19 deg 05' 27" | Aquarius |
| 8 | 19 deg 05' 27" to 21 deg 49' 05" | Pisces |
| 9 | 21 deg 49' 05" to 24 deg 32' 44" | Aries |
| 10 | 24 deg 32' 44" to 27 deg 16' 22" | Taurus |
| 11 | 27 deg 16' 22" to 30 deg 00' | Gemini |
| Parts per sign | 11 | |
Eleven parts reach eleven signs, so one sign is never reached from Sagittarius: Cancer, the sign just before Leo. In the sample chart below the Sun, at 16.8657 degrees, lies in the seventh part and so in Aquarius; Saturn, at 21.9172 degrees, has just crossed into the ninth and sits in Aries.
The D11 of a sample chart
The same rule applied to a chart cast for 1 January 1990, 12:00 IST, Chennai — an invented moment, not anyone's birth. Each body's D1 position gives its part, the starting sign gives the count.
| # | Body (D1 position) | Part -> D11 sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ascendant, Pisces 16.4685 deg | 7th from Taurus -> Scorpio |
| 2 | Sun, Sagittarius 16.8657 deg | 7th from Leo -> Aquarius |
| 3 | Moon, Aquarius 6.4655 deg | 3rd from Gemini -> Leo |
| 4 | Mars, Scorpio 16.1275 deg | 6th from Virgo -> Aquarius |
| 5 | Mercury, Capricorn 2.0133 deg | 1st from Cancer -> Cancer |
| 6 | Jupiter, Gemini 11.4557 deg | 5th from Aquarius -> Gemini |
| 7 | Venus, Capricorn 12.5298 deg | 5th from Cancer -> Scorpio |
| 8 | Saturn, Sagittarius 21.9172 deg | 9th from Leo -> Aries |
| 9 | Rahu, Capricorn 24.7264 deg | 10th from Cancer -> Aries |
| 10 | Ketu, Cancer 24.7264 deg | 10th from Capricorn -> Libra |
Jupiter comes back to Gemini, its own D1 sign, and Mercury to Capricorn's starting sign, Cancer. The two nodes hold the same degree and therefore the same part, and their starting signs are six apart, which keeps them opposite: Aries and Libra.
How to read the result
Generate the chart, open Divisional Charts and set one cell of the six to D-11_rudramsa, listed between the D-10 and D-12 entries. Unless the cells have been changed before, they open on the Rasi, Navamsa, Drekkana, Chaturtamsa, Saptamsa and Dasamsa, so the D11 takes one switch to bring up.
On a desktop, resting the pointer on a body opens a tooltip with its D11 sign and a degree: its position inside the part, stretched to a full sign — eleven times the D1 degree, less whole thirties. Near 0 the body has just entered its part, near 30 it is about to leave.
Two checks make a hand count quick. A body in the first part of Aries or Libra keeps its own sign, because those two signs start from themselves. And the nodes always land opposite each other, since they share a degree and their starting signs are mirrored six apart.
Key terms
- Rudramsa
- The usual name of the D11 in the divisional-chart menu and in this calculator: the part of a sign belonging to one of the eleven Rudras.
- Ekadasamsa
- Literally the eleventh part; some schools use it for a D11 counted backwards through the zodiac, which places planets differently from the count used here.
- Starting sign
- The sign a body's count begins from: its own sign reflected across Aries, so Taurus pairs with Pisces and Leo with Sagittarius.
- Eleventh house
- The house of gains, which tradition reads together with the D11.
- Part edge
- The boundary between two rudramsa parts; near one, a few minutes of birth time can move a body into the next sign.
132 cells around the zodiac
Eleven parts in each of twelve signs give 132 distinct rudramsa positions, between 108 for the navamsa and 144 for the dwadasamsa.
One sign out of reach
From any sign the eleven parts reach eleven signs and miss exactly one, the sign just before the starting sign — Cancer for Sagittarius, Pisces for Aries.
Checked against the rule
Each planet's D11 sign on the screen follows the counting rule stated above, so it can be re-derived by hand from the D1 degree.
Common questions
What is the D11 chart in astrology?
The D11, or rudramsa, is the divisional chart of eleven parts: every sign is cut into eleven equal slices and each planet is re-placed in the sign that its slice leads to. Tradition reads it for the matters of the eleventh house; the sixteen-chart scheme of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra leaves it out.
How is the D11 chart calculated?
Eleven times the degrees in the sign, divided by thirty, gives a number whose whole part plus one is the part. Mirror the occupied sign across Aries for the starting sign, then count forward. Mercury, 2.0133 degrees into Capricorn, sits in the first part, and Capricorn mirrors to Cancer, so its D11 sign is Cancer.
Why does another D11 calculator show different signs?
Because it may use another count. Some count the eleven parts backwards through the zodiac, some reverse the count in the even signs; this calculator counts forward from the mirrored sign by default. Compare the method before comparing the charts.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. Each rudramsa part spans less than three degrees, which the rising degree crosses in about eleven minutes on average — quicker or slower with latitude and the rising sign — so a birth time rounded to the quarter hour can put the D11 ascendant in a neighbouring sign.
How do I use this D11 chart calculator?
Fill in when and where the person was born on the free birth-chart form; the chart appears without an account. Then choose D-11_rudramsa from the menu of any cell on the Divisional Charts screen. An account is asked for only to save or share the chart.
