D24 Chart Calculator - Chaturvimsamsa Chart
A free chaturvimsamsa (D24) chart calculator — twenty-four parts of 1 degree 15 minutes per sign, counted forward from Leo in odd signs and from Cancer in even signs.
The chaturvimsamsa, also called the siddhamsa, is the D24. Every sign is divided into twenty-four parts of 1 degree 15 minutes each. Then, by default, this calculator begins an odd sign's run at Leo and an even sign's at Cancer, both moving forward. Twenty-four is two full rounds of the zodiac: parts 13 to 24 copy the signs of parts 1 to 12, and every sign turns up twice in each sign's run.
Leo is ruled by the Sun, Cancer by the Moon. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra starts the D24 from those two, Leo for odd signs and Cancer for even, and names twelve presiding deities, Skanda to Bhima, that come round twice through an odd sign; for an even one the list is taken in reverse, from Bhima. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao's textbook counts both kinds of sign forward, and the default here follows it.
Classically the D24 is consulted for learning: BPHS assigns learning to the chaturvimsamsa, while Narasimha Rao's reading covers learning, knowledge and education, on the mental plane beside the D16 and D20. His textbook takes the D24's 4th house for education and its 5th for intelligence and scholarship. Of the Vimsopaka groupings, the sixteen-chart Shodasavarga alone includes the D24, at half a point.
The twenty-four parts of Leo
Leo is odd, which keeps its first part in Leo, and the run goes forward. The sample used across these pages, cast for Chennai at noon IST on 1 January 1990 and made up rather than anyone's birth, has no body in Leo, so the table gives the grid itself.
| Part | Arc within Leo | Chaturvimsamsa sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 deg 00' - 1 deg 15' | Leo |
| 2 | 1 deg 15' - 2 deg 30' | Virgo |
| 3 | 2 deg 30' - 3 deg 45' | Libra |
| 4 | 3 deg 45' - 5 deg 00' | Scorpio |
| 5 | 5 deg 00' - 6 deg 15' | Sagittarius |
| 6 | 6 deg 15' - 7 deg 30' | Capricorn |
| 7 | 7 deg 30' - 8 deg 45' | Aquarius |
| 8 | 8 deg 45' - 10 deg 00' | Pisces |
| 9 | 10 deg 00' - 11 deg 15' | Aries |
| 10 | 11 deg 15' - 12 deg 30' | Taurus |
| 11 | 12 deg 30' - 13 deg 45' | Gemini |
| 12 | 13 deg 45' - 15 deg 00' | Cancer |
| 13 | 15 deg 00' - 16 deg 15' | Leo |
| 14 | 16 deg 15' - 17 deg 30' | Virgo |
| 15 | 17 deg 30' - 18 deg 45' | Libra |
| 16 | 18 deg 45' - 20 deg 00' | Scorpio |
| 17 | 20 deg 00' - 21 deg 15' | Sagittarius |
| 18 | 21 deg 15' - 22 deg 30' | Capricorn |
| 19 | 22 deg 30' - 23 deg 45' | Aquarius |
| 20 | 23 deg 45' - 25 deg 00' | Pisces |
| 21 | 25 deg 00' - 26 deg 15' | Aries |
| 22 | 26 deg 15' - 27 deg 30' | Taurus |
| 23 | 27 deg 30' - 28 deg 45' | Gemini |
| 24 | 28 deg 45' - 30 deg 00' | Cancer |
Every odd sign uses this same column of signs. The Sun, 16 deg 51' into Sagittarius, also odd, is in part 14, 16 deg 15' to 17 deg 30', and so lands in Virgo, its D24 sign in the engine's output. An even sign uses the same arcs with the column moved back one sign to begin at Cancer.
How to read the result
Choose D-24_chaturvimsamsa from a cell's selector, where it sits between D-20_vimsamsa and D-27_nakshatramsa. The As mark in that cell gives the D24 lagna. In the sample it is Leo: the ascendant, 16 deg 28' into Pisces, an even sign, lies in part 14, and thirteen signs on from Cancer is Leo.
Hovering a body shows its D24 sign beside a degree twenty-four times its rasi degree, whole thirties removed, so a reading of 0 means the 1 deg 15' part has just opened. Rahu and Ketu, at the same degree in opposite signs, fall in a single D24 sign, because a sign and the one facing it have matching parity; in the sample that sign is Aquarius.
Narasimha Rao's textbook looks to the D24's 4th house for education and to its 5th for intelligence, scholarship and academic distinctions, and treats the arudha of the D24's 4th house as the place where the learning happens — school, college or university. The amber A4 in a D24 cell is that pada, worked out from the D24's own lagna and lords.
Key terms
- D-24_chaturvimsamsa
- This chart's key in every cell's selector; it opens the forward count from Leo and from Cancer that the engine uses by default.
- Siddhamsa
- A second name for the D24, given in Narasimha Rao's textbook alongside chaturvimsamsa; both refer to one chart.
- Odd and even signs
- Signs 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, from Aries round to Aquarius, are odd and the six between them even; parity alone decides whether the D24 run opens at Leo or at Cancer.
- Deity order
- BPHS takes the twelve D24 deity names in reverse for an even sign, beginning from Bhima; the count of signs itself still runs forward here.
- A4 of the D24
- The pada Narasimha Rao reads for the place of education, the institution in which a person's learning takes place.
Two rounds per sign
Twenty-four parts cover the twelve signs twice, so every zodiac sign fills two of the 1 deg 15' slots inside every sign.
Odd from Leo, even from Cancer
The two seeds are neighbouring signs, the Sun's and the Moon's, and by default both runs go forward through the zodiac.
Learning, as attributed
BPHS consults the chaturvimsamsa for learning, and Narasimha Rao for learning, knowledge and education. The page reports both and draws no conclusion about any chart.
Common questions
What is a chaturvimsamsa chart?
The chaturvimsamsa is the D24: each sign cut into twenty-four parts of 1 deg 15', the parts assigned from Leo onward when the sign is odd and from Cancer onward when it is even.
Is the D24 the same as the siddhamsa?
Yes. Siddhamsa is another name for the D24 chaturvimsamsa, and Narasimha Rao's textbook uses both. They point to the same twenty-four-part chart drawn here.
Do even signs count backward in the D24?
Not in this calculator by default. BPHS starts even signs from Cancer and runs the deity names backward. Here both odd and even signs count forward, as in Narasimha Rao's textbook, whose example puts a Jupiter 19 degrees into Scorpio in Libra through its 16th part.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For the D24 lagna, yes: one part is 1 deg 15', a narrow strip that the rising degree passes through fast, so a small timing error can push the D24 ascendant a sign or more along. The Sun needs over a day to cross one part; the Moon, moving about 13 degrees a day, takes roughly two hours.
Which house of the D24 is read for education?
In Narasimha Rao's textbook the D24's 4th house stands for education and formal learning and its 5th for intelligence and scholarship; the book also seeds a Narayana dasa of the D24 from the 4th house when formal education is the question.
