The navamsa, or D9, is the ninth divisional chart. Each 30-degree sign is split into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and a body is re-placed into the sign its own part points to. Classically it is the varga consulted for marriage and matters of the spouse, for dharma, and for a planet's overall strength. Jagannatha Hora derives it from astronomical longitudes rather than a printed grid.
The run of nine does not begin at the sign itself, but at Aries for a fiery sign, Capricorn for earthy, Libra for airy and Cancer for watery, counting forward one sign per part. Since that start is set by element, the three signs of an element share one identical map, and twelve signs reduce to four. A navamsa also measures exactly what a nakshatra pada does — 3 degrees 20 minutes — and both grids run from 0 degrees Aries, giving 108 of each.
